Coach Outings Programme

The coach outings available are first summarised below (in date order), followed by details for each when known and then any write-ups.

All coach outings have to be booked and this web site does not necessary keep up to date with when coaches are fully booked. Late bookings are usually available

Please do not change your pick-up point without telling the organiser. This will save the coach waiting for you, thinking you are late.

If you are not coming please let John Francis (020 8527 3938) know.

On occasions nobody chooses the Romford pick-up and consequently it is cancelled. Do not switch to Romford unless you let the organiser know, or else you might have a spoiled day.

GANTS HILL PICK-UP. The pick-up historically described as '66 Bus Stop opposite Odeon/Old Odeon site' is now to be described as '66 Bus Stop near the Corinthian Taverna'.

07:45 ...... Hawkey Hall
08:00 ...... Bus stop in Forest Road, Barkingside near Fairlop Tube Station

Note Well: early morning congestion can cause delays

Walk

The Reverend Gilbert White was arguably England's first great Naturalist, and his book "The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne" published in 1788, has never been out of print and is elegantly evocative of the tranquil life of rural village England.

In the Village Church there is a stained glass window to St. Francis that commemorates the Reverend White, depicting every bird and animal that he spent his life studying. Opposite the Church, across the green, stands his home, now a museum, tea room, gift shop and gardens, bordering Selborne Hanger. As well as celebrating the work of Gilbert White, there is also an exhibition on the life of Captain Oates of the Scott Antarctic Expedition

Option 1 A 4½ mile leisurely walk from Selborne to Chawton, mainly flat. Lunch at Chawton: the "Grey Friar" Public House or the Cassandra Tea Rooms. A 6½ mile afternoon walk returning to Selborne at moderate pace, visiting: Lower Farringdon, Northfield Hill, Newton Valence, Selborne Hill and Selborne Common.
Cost: £13.50     Leader: Robin

Option 2 A 4½ mile leisurely walk, mainly flat, from Selborne to Chawton. Lunch at Chawton. The possibility of visiting Jane Austen's home at Chawton (cost extra). A return by coach for an afternoon visit to Gilbert White's home and gardens (included in the cost).
Cost: £13.50     Leader:: John F

Option 3 For non-walkers. The morning at Chawton visiting Jane Austen's House (cost extra). Lunch at Chawton. Rejoining the coach to take you to Selborne to visit the Reverend White's home and gardens.
Cost: £19     Entry to Jane Austen's House is extra.

Lunch

Lunch: All day walkers are asked to bring their own lunch which cannot be consumed at the pub. Nearby there is a Village green and Churchyard.
Visitors to Gilbert White's home will have time for a pub lunch but this will probably preclude you from visiting Jane Austen's house, unless you are a non-walker.

A Walk and Visit to Rockingham Castle, Leicestershire

Sue C and John J

4.5 miles
Pace: Medium

£21

PickUp Points

07:45 ...... Hawkey Hall
07:45 ...... Loughton (bus stop opposite M&S)

Note Well: early morning congestion can cause delays

Walk

The cost includes entry to the Castle and Gardens, starting with an introductory talk. The walk will be 4.5 miles at medium pace. Bring a snack for a mid-walk break.

Our walk begins in Wilbarston Village and goes through delightfully undulating scenery following, for some while, the Jurassic Way. En route we have splendid views over the broad Welland Valley. Mid-way there is a short stretch via a Countryside Park and the last part of the morning walk takes us through the extensive grounds of Rockingham Park before arriving at the Castle.

Rockingham Castle was built under instruction from William the Conqueror after the Battle of Hastings. Situated on a rocky outcrop the Castle has a spectacular position overlooking the Welland Valley. Abandoned by Henry VII in 1485, the estate was bought by Sir Lewis Watson in 1620 and has remained in the Watson family ever since.

There is much to see within the Castle walls including the Great Hall, the Long Gallery and Salvin's Flag Tower. Aptly named for us, the Walker's House (1655) contains tea rooms where light lunches and afternoon teas can be enjoyed. The walnut cake is particularly recommended!

Outside the Castle are 18 acres of beautifully terraced gardens and a wild garden with a remarkable collection of plants and trees. Parts of the gardens extend back to the 12th century. This Castle visit really is a journey through 900 years of history. Together with the ramble we can look forward to a fascinating day's outing.

Lunch

Light lunches and afternoon teas.
