The holidays available are first summarised below and then this is followed by details for each when known.

The holidays may be organised completely by the West Essex Ramblers or the West Essex Ramblers may liaise on behalf of a major walks holiday company.

All holidays have to be booked and this web site does not necessarily keep up to date with when holidays are fully booked. There are often late cancellations for holidays.

The town of Cometa is our base to explore the Andalucian hill country, with its famous "white villages", many of which are built in traditional Arabic style. With our leaders we can walk directly into the valleys, hills and villages of the Sierra Almijara. Local Transport may be used so that we can walk further afield. Competa itself has an old centre with a maze of narrow cobbled streets and buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries. We stay in the 3-star Hotel Balcon de Competa with a lounge, bar and restaurant. All breakfasts and dinners will be taken at the hotel. There is an outside swimming pool, but this not always in use. The walking grades are D and D+ and two separate walks will cover this grading range each day. RWH's brochure grade definitions are: 'D' is "reasonably energetic walking on hills rather than mountains. Daily walks are usually from 6 to 10 miles and include inclines of generally between 800-2,000 ft. Your average daily walking will be less than 5 hours". 'D+' is "expect energetic days among hills and easy mountain walking, sometimes reaching 2,500 ft at certain mountain centres. Daily walking time will rarely exceed 6 hours". Whilst terrain is described as "moderate" in both grades for this holiday, some paths may have steep ascents/descents and be rough underfoot. On both grades walking boots are essential. Basic Holiday Cost: £699 p.p. inclusive of flights (from Gatwick), transfers, seven nights half-board accommodation and a full walking programme with three leaders, subject to group size. Local transport costs that are part of the holiday are not included. Single Supplement: £89 p.p. There are various accommodation types within the hotel. Subject to availability, these will allocated on a first come first served basis. Please note, single rooms are very limited. Initial Deposit: £100 p.p. Insurance Not included, but essential. Group Discount: Based on the holiday cost (excluding supplements) RHW will offer a group discount if sufficient numbers are reached. This money will be used to provide coach transport from our usual pick up points to and from Gatwick. The travelling times have yet to be confirmed, but it is likely to be an early morning flight. Subject to satisfactory services, the discount should cover gratuities to be given to the three leaders, and coach drivers, both here and in Competa. I will be incurring certain on-going costs in the organisation of the holiday (photocopying, phone calls, etc) and these will be taken out of the discount. We are members of the West Essex Ramblers and after discussion with some W.E. friends have decided to arrange a short walking holiday around the Teutoburger Wald, the northernmost ridge of hills in Germany. The trip will be in the Autumn of 2012. (See printed Programme for dates). We have a few spare spaces and are extending an invitation to other W.E. members to join us. WE MUST STRESS THAT WE ARE ORGANISING THIS TRIP ON A STRICTLY PRIVATE BASIS AND THAT THIS IS NOT NOT AN OFFICIAL RAMBLERS' HOLIDAY. PARTICIPANTS WILL TAKE PART AT THEIR OWN RISK AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THEIR OWN INSURANCE ARRANGEMENTS. We lived and worked in this part of Germany many years ago and regularly revisit the area. We are arranging with a lot of help from two local German friends who have also joined in some W.E. rambles when visiting us. They are keen walkers with a fund of local knowledge and are very involved in conservation and environmental issues in the area. The region is primarily a rural one of mixed forestation and agriculture. We are planning one walk per day for the five days of our stay. These will be leisurely/moderately paced, fairly gentle walks between 5 and 10 miles in length; some to cover parts of the Hermannsweg and two to include visits with commentary to the local historical towns of Munster and Osnabruck. We are also hoping to arrange social/ cultural events/visits and a joint ramble with a local group. We have provisionally arranged accommodation for 27 prople at a local Gasthof outside the small town of Lengerich, www.Gasthof-Prigge.de . We regret that we do not have any single rooms available at this stage but if you are interested in coming but need a single room, we can put your name on a waiting list. Assuming no astronomical rises in fuel prices, large changes in the exchange rate, etc, we estimate that the average cost will be approximately £610 per person for travel and accommodation, which comprises room, buffet breakfast (where guests can make up their own packed lunch) and evening meal. This does not include drinks, extra snacks or any charges to places of interest. We plan to travel by coach from local pick-up points and would have the services of the coach in Germany.
