Countryside Watch

The main task of the group's countryside watch is to help to implement at a local level the aim of the Ramblers' Association of defending the beauty of the countryside by watching out for all kinds of development which adversely affect the countryside and to respond and campaign appropriately. The countryside watch also builds close links with the group's footpath care team, the planning department of the local authority and parish councils, and with organisations such as CPRE (Campaign for the Protection of Rural England).

As walkers we are all users of the countryside and should help with its protection. Through WEP (West Essex Programme, the members' newsheet) the countryside watch has been keeping members informed of special campaigns and consultations seeking their help where appropriate. This web site should add to this.

During 2005 countryside watch was actively involved in the “Stop Stanstead Expansion Campaign” and in protesting against the government plans to build low cost houses in the M11 corridor.

Publication of the Air Transport White Paper in 2003 allowed the Government to take a step backwards. BAA can no longer hide behind the Department for Transport and is the prime target for SSE's campaign to prevent expansion. On behalf of tens of thousands of residents, Stop Stansted Expansion will pursue a relentless campaign of challenges against BAA – legal, commercial, planning and regulatory. SSE expects its campaign to continue for years rather than months until proposals for a second runway are eventually abandoned or rejected on environmental or economic grounds. The more immediate task is to fight the environmentally unsustainable proposals to expand use of the existing runway beyond the approved limit of 25 million passengers per annum.
