Photo Gallery

West Essex Ramblers put on over 200 walks a year which you get to under your own steam or by an organised Coach Trip. To try and ENTICE YOU to join us we have prepared a gallery of some of our walks to show you what walking means to us. [The gallery is rather incomplete as it takes our novice Web Author a long time to prepare each gallery but, in the long term, we hope to have examples of all our walk types].
We also have walking holidays which are typically 2 to 8 days and we have prepared reviews accompanied by pictures for these too.

VIEWING IMAGES

pdf files
When viewing pdf files that contain images, particularly on this web site, zooming in at up to 400% produces images that are much clearer although you may have to scroll around the document to find them.

FULL SCREEN
To prevent the Title Bar at the top and the Task Bar at the bottom being displayed, so that an image can use more of the screen, it works for me in Microsoft XP - when the photo is displayed - to do the following:
press F11 for full screen;
press F11 to restore down
and do Ctrl W to close photo window.
Do next photo.
OR
F11, Ctrl W, next photo & use F11 on last photo only.

NB 1 .. This is also good for multimap and other applications.
NB 2 .. Once the full screen is in use, if you select another image etc from it, you will not get full screen on the new image. To overcome this, for example, on the Brecon review, select the review and maximise it; select a map and maximise it; select a photo and full screen it.

SCREEN SIZE
These web pages are designed for a screen size of 1024x768 (pixels), however the images may be viewed better as follows:

SCHEDULED WALKS

INTRODUCTION
Our scheduled walks, found on the WALKS page, usually are on a Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. We try to do two short walks and two long walks a week and the Wednesday and Thursday will alternate to which is the shorter and longer where practical. A figure of eight walk, where the lunch break will be at the original start, allows for a shorter and longer walk on the same day! Coach trips generally replace a more local walk. Then there is currently a monthly walk from Theydon Bois, at 3.5 miles (4 miles on the histogram), on a Tuesday by Arthur. Here there is a grand opportunity to get walking for those who do not think they could ever walk more than maybe a mile!

MORNING WALKS
As seen from the histogram above there are a lot of walks from 4 to 6 miles. These are mainly our morning walks but do include evening walks, which are usually in the summer, and extra walks after Christmas, at Easter, and Bank Holidays.
Typically there is a morning break for 10 mins where you can drink your own coffee or water, or, if you are lucky, there's a cafe available.

DAY WALKS
These walks are the ones probable starting at 9 miles and ranging up to 14 miles. We often have one walk a year which is between 20 and 30 miles (Not shown in the histogram).
These walks normally start mid-morning (10:00 to 11:00) and finish between 15:30 and 17:00 depending on their length. The standard break for lunch is 45 minutes but will be set by the leader - could be between 20 and 60 minutes. There are normally "drink your own drinks" breaks of 10 minutes in the morning and the afternoon. Whereas morning walks tend to be more leasurely, the day walks often have a little more impetus to ensure the finish is not running into the early evening.
