Around Chania

Chania is a very pleasant place and more time there would have been very welcomed. They have numerous tavernas to choose from for a drink or a meal and the old town is nicely compact for walking around and has quite a history and cultural identity caused by previous invading rulers. A guide book is really useful, particularly “Fenny's Hania (ISBN: 0-9540296-0-7)” if you get a copy.

A Cultural Visit to Knossos and Heraklion

5km SW of Heraklion lies Knossos - a Minoan Palace first built about 2000BC, destroyed in 1700BC, rebuilt and then re-destroyed in 1350BC. Minos Kalokairinos did excavations in 1878 but, from 1900-31, Sir Arthur Evans excavated the Palace and its environs and, controversially, used concrete in its restoration. The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion holds many of its artifacts. [I'm sorry that I cannot Identify everything].

A walk from Kalidonia to Kolimbari

After lunch in Charnia we bussed to Kalidonia and there was a choice of a 5 or 6 mile walk although we started together. The longer higher route walkers were able to look down over where the battle of Crete occurred in 1941 and we all had an early dinner of Fresh Sardines at a beach Taverna in Kolimbari.

A Walk from Lakki to Skordalou

We coached to Lakki, in the White Mountains' foothills and walked via Agia Paraskevi church to Karanos. Here we had orange cake and drinks at a kafe followed by a visit to the local church and then back for lunch. In the afternoon some walked to Skordalou for the coach whilst others walked further using an old mule trail and a dry river bed and were then picked up by the coach.

A Walk from Gouverneto Monastery to Stavros

We taxied to the Monastery of St John of Gouverneto which we walked passed in silence! We passed ruins (unidentified by me) as we walked north towards the sea, then turned left and came to the derelict Monastery of St John the Hermit (Moni Ioannou Erimiti) and his Cave. We followed a river bed, west, then over a plateau for a cliff-top lunch. Passed the site of an old village, then followed a gorge to Stavros Beach. Zorbo the Greek's dance “Sirtaki” was filmed here and the OSCAR won by the English Cameraman, Walter Lassally, for the film was brought to our table during Lunch at the Christiana Taverna. We bussed home.

A Walk from Xyloskala, through the Samaria Gorge, to Agia Roumeli

Coached to Xyloskala in the White Mountains and walked down into the Samaria Gorge. We reached the Samaria hamlet which was abandoned after the gorge became a National Park. The gorge, quite wide at first, gradually narrowed and was then narrow for several miles. Finally we reached the sea at Agia Roumeli and its tavernas and then a boat trip to Sougia and coach home.

A Walk from Kelissougeio to Nopigia

We bussed again to the Rodopou Penisula but this time we started at Kelissougeio. We went northwards and looking west we saw Granvousa Penisula over the Bay of Kissamos and then arrived at Ravdoucha. We consumed Kailtsounia pies at Giogia's Kafenion. Soon we were away over to the coast travelling south. A quick stop was taken at the tiny Agia Marina church, also there was a drinks break, all along a rocky hillside we took to the Sargos Taverna in Nopigia where we had drinks. We bussed back to Charnia.

A Walk from Therisso to Meskla

Another trip to the White Mountains' foothills – Therisso. This page illustrates the valley walk, others chose the road route, to Zourva for lunch at Aimilia's Taverna. The morning break, although on a road, and the lunch were stunning in both views and its wildness. There was plenty of unusual flowers and all day the continually changing scenery was exceptional – including the goats.
