One of the great joys of the holiday was eating in a different taverna each evening. Our leader, Yvonne of Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, wanted us to have the chance to experience the wide range of Cretan cooking so organised that the tavernas offered numerous main courses and, over the week, 21 different mezedes. Sometimes the proprietor gave us a free sweet course and often glasses of raki appeared. During the week we also indulged in three cooked lunches at tavernas where there was the opportunity for freshly squeezed orange juice and cold beers.

From the hotel we could glimpse, to the south, late snow on the tops of the White Mountains. A number of our walks took us into the beautiful foothills of the range, visiting en route attractive villages such as Lakki and Karanos. One day, on the west side of the Rodopou Peninsular, we reached the remote hamlet of Ravdoucha. Here we tucked into kalitounia pies (cheese and spinach filled) provided by the delightful family at Giorgia's Kafenion. So tempting were the pies that one or two walkers ordered five! No names mentioned, of course!
